DP Baseball welcomed Georgia power Kennesaw Mountain to John Barbati Field to kick off the 2018 season and the result was every bit as exciting as the anticipation. DP (1-0) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the fourth inning and withstood a furious rally before pulling away for a 7-4 victory. Brandon Fields’RBI single in the bottom of the third scored Hamzah Nobles to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead but in the fourth, DP opened the floodgates. With two outs and runners at second and third, Raymond Negron-Valero ripped a single into right field to score Diego Garcia-Chiniros to double the lead to 2-0. Hamzah Nobles followed with a single to left that brought home Logan Bryan to make it 3-0 before August Haymaker’s two-run double scored Negron-Valero and Nobles to stretch the lead to 5-0. Kennesaw Mountain would battle back for four runs in the top of the sixth to close the gap to 5-4 but DP rallied for two more runs in the bottom of the inning. With runners at second and third and one out, Brandon Fields doubled to left to bring home Raymond Negron-Valero and Hamzah Nobles for the final 7-4 margin. Fields finished 2-2 with three RBIs while Diego Garcia-Chirinos went 2-3 with a run. Hamzah Nobles went 1-3 and scored three runs. On the mound, Mitchell Stockwell went four shutout innings and allowed just two hits while striking out five to pick up the victory. The Panthers will get another stern test Friday at home vs. West Orange.
